An overview of Crosslink
Crosslink is a service that enables users to significantly reduce their mobile phone bills by reducing the costs of international calls from their mobile phones.
It does this by using an application installed on the Customer's mobile device that checks the destination of outgoing calls from the mobile phone handset and re-routes International destinations over Datatel's fixed line network. The Crosslink solution does not require any additional implementation except a one time simple installation. As the mobile device functions normally, the Crosslink software constantly operates in the background.
The Result: this enables the user to benefit from the significantly cheaper international calling rates that are possible using Datatel's fixed line network rather than the high rates charged by the mobile network operators, without cumbersome calling codes, access numbers and pin codes.
How a call is made via Crosslink
Crosslink for Symbian or Microsoft Windows Mobile platforms silently monitors calls that are dialled on the handset.
- This service is seamless and requires absolutely no additional effort of the Customer (such as long access codes etc.).
- International calls made from the mobile device will automatically be rerouted over Datatel's network, recognising short-dial and Phonebook entries.

Symbian and Microsoft Windows Mobile handsets provide the best functionality as the application provides strong support for making calls, and assumes greater control (automation) over the environment. Using these devices the user will normally have the application hidden. Numbers selected from the phonebook or dialled directly will be examined by the application and it will decide whether to dial the platform and forward the number, or allow the normal Mobile network routes to be used. From the user's perspective, the calling experience is similar whether the handset is routing the call via Crosslink or not. The only difference is a slightly longer call connection time when a call is routed via Crosslink, but there will be a progress bar to indicate that the call is being rerouted over Datatel's network to reduce call costs.
Phones that have Java (most phones produced in recent years do have Java) but are not Symbian or Microsoft Windows Mobile based can use a different version of Crosslink. This version is visible whilst the number is being called and gives the user access to the normal functionality of the phonebook so that numbers can be selected and dialled. It is as easy to start up as using the contacts or phonebook in the phone.
Crosslink Call Type selection
This Crosslink service has been specifically developed to offer reduced mobile calls to International numbers.
 |
Any other call types (mobile to mobile, or mobile to UK Geo number) that a Customer tries to make over the Crosslink service (by calling the Access Number directly) will be met with this recorded message: "Calls to this destination type are currently barred, please hang up". |
In the future Datatel hope to be able to offer least cost call routing for other call types using the Crosslink application, but at the moment only International least call routing service will be available. All customers will be notified when such call service options are made available.
