Since the 1970s the rate of tropical deforestation has accelerated greatly, approximately 100,000 sq km (39,000 sq mi) of rain forest are destroyed or seriously degraded every year.

Some unique rain forests have been almost totally destroyed. For example, there remains less than two per cent of the original Atlantic coastal rain forest of Brazil.

Fortunately, a number of national and international organisations have been established since the 1970s to deal specifically with rain forest conversion and conservation. Efforts are now underway to find economic alternatives to massive deforestation. This will be the main challenge for the preservation of significant parts of the rain forest as time moves on.

The Rainforest Foundation is one of these leading organisations and is devoted to raising £££’s for the funding of methods to reduce and eventually eliminate the continuing deforestation and the numerous social problems brought about from it.
